Teaching algorithmic literacy: a research project

As algorithms continue to rapidly proliferate throughout our society in powerful ways, particularly within social media platforms and AI chatbots, many concerns have been raised, including the effects on critical thinking, social cohesion, privacy, and mental wellbeing, among others. In order to mitigate these concerns, it is essential that algorithmic literacy is being taught throughout our schooling system in an equitable manner. We want to hear teacher's thoughts on this matter, in order to work towards ensuring that they get the support and resources that they need in order to help their students to develop this critical skill.

This research is being conducted as part of a PhD at Curtin University, in Perth, Western Australia. It aims to explore Australian teachers’ levels of algorithmic literacy and their self-efficacy in regards to teaching it.

If you teach in a primary or secondary school in Australia (or if you are a final year pre-service teacher) and would like to take part in this important research, please click here to complete a short online questionnaire.
